Mimika

Mimika is an administrative regency on the southern coast of Central Papua, comprising 18 districts and numerous rural settlements. The territory combines coastal and wetland areas, where most villages are accessible by river and waterways.

The region became a separate regency in 2000 through an administrative reorganization in Papua. This restructuring created a distinct administrative division for the southern coastal area.

The regency preserves local Papuan traditions in everyday life, showing how indigenous customs and modern development coexist in the same communities.

The area is reached through Timika's airport, which connects to other Indonesian cities. Getting around locally requires understanding that boat travel along river routes is the main way to move between villages.

The regency contains substantial gold and copper deposits that support large-scale mining operations with significant economic impact. This mining activity takes place within one of the densest wilderness areas, home to thousands of small farming families.
