Fox Islands, Island group in Alaska, United States

The Fox Islands stretch across the eastern Aleutian chain with a rugged, mountainous landscape dotted by several active volcanoes. The terrain features steep slopes, volcanic peaks, and sparse vegetation adapted to the harsh conditions of this remote region.

Russian explorer Vitus Bering charted these islands in 1741, marking the start of European exploration in the region. Afterward, the chain became a focal point for Russian fur trading, shaping settlement and economic activity for generations.

The Aleut people have called these islands home for thousands of years, and their descendants shape island life today through fishing and hunting rooted in ancient ways. These traditions remain central to how communities relate to the land and sea around them.

Reaching the islands requires a boat or plane, as there are no bridges or regular road connections between them. Dutch Harbor on Unalaska Island serves as the main gateway and supply hub for visitors and commercial traffic.

Makushin, a volcano on Unalaska Island, rises to 2,000 meters and stands as one of the highest points in the island chain. This stark height makes it a defining landmark for seafarers and a visually dominant feature shaping how visitors perceive the region.
