The Koyukon Athabascans maintain traditional practices of hunting, fishing, and gathering throughout the refuge, sharing their knowledge of natural history through generations.
Visitors can reach the refuge exclusively by air transportation or river travel, as no roads connect this protected area to nearby communities.
The Nogahabara Sand Dunes, measuring six miles in diameter, form an active dune field that originated from wind-blown glacial sand thousands of years ago.
