Laguna del Buey, Mountain lake in Cauca, Colombia
Laguna del Buey is a mountain lake in Colombia's Cauca region located at about 3,160 meters elevation between the municipalities of Puracé and San Agustín. Water from the lake flows through the El Buey stream and connects to the Mazamorras River system that drains the surrounding highlands.
Early explorers believed this lake was the source of the Río Cauca, but research later determined the river actually originates further southwest at a higher elevation on Cerro del Cubilete. This geographic discovery corrected earlier assumptions about the region's water systems.
The lake sits within the ancestral lands of the Kokonuko Yanacona people, who have connections to this high mountain environment. Native plants like bromelias and mortillos grow here and reflect the relationship between indigenous communities and this remote landscape.
The lake sits at high altitude in a mountain environment that requires good physical fitness to reach due to elevation. Weather conditions can change quickly at this height, so bring weather-resistant clothing and sturdy footwear for the journey.
