Kirkwood, Mountain resort and census-designated place in Alpine and Amador Counties, California.
Kirkwood is a mountain community in the Sierra Nevada at about 7,700 feet (2,344 meters) elevation, spread across 53 square miles of terrain. The area features forested slopes, meadows, and bodies of water surrounded by rocky peaks.
The settlement began in 1863 when Zack Kirkwood built an inn following the opening of the Amador/Nevada Wagon Toll Road. This early stopping point gradually grew into a mountain community.
The winter season transforms Kirkwood into a destination where visitors participate in skiing, snowboarding, and seasonal community gatherings at the mountain resort.
The area is accessible year-round, though seasonal weather dramatically affects conditions and available activities. Plan your visit according to the season, as winter brings snow and summer opens mountain trails.
The original Kirkwood inn stood at the convergence of three county borders, a rare geographic meeting point. This unusual location made the place a natural gathering spot for travelers crossing the mountains.
