Lienz District, Administrative district in East Tyrol, Austria
The Lienz District covers 2,016 square kilometers of land between the Hohe Tauern mountains and borders Italy through the Veneto and South Tyrol regions.
Following World War I, the Treaty of Saint-Germain separated this district from North Tyrol, creating a geographical distinction that continues to the present day.
The district contains 33 municipalities that maintain local traditions through their administrative structures, connecting communities across multiple Alpine valleys.
The Felbertauern road and tunnel system provides essential transportation links between the Lienz District and North Tyrol throughout the year.
This territory stands as the only district in East Tyrol and remained under British control after World War II while other parts of Tyrol were occupied by France.
