Hakaluki Haor, Wetland conservation area in Sylhet Division, Bangladesh
The Hakaluki Haor spans 181 square kilometers across five administrative regions, containing 238 interconnected water bodies that form an extensive marsh ecosystem.
The formation of this wetland dates back to the Pleistocene epoch, approximately 2.5 million years ago, when geological processes shaped the lake-like basin.
Local communities of 190,000 residents maintain traditional fishing practices and agricultural methods adapted to the seasonal flooding patterns of the wetland.
During the dry season, the water bodies cover 4,400 hectares, while in the rainy season the flooded area expands to 18,383 hectares for up to five months.
The wetland provides habitat for 558 animal species, including 417 bird species, with 26 threatened species relying on these protected waters for survival.
