Qinling, Mountain range in Shaanxi Province, China
Qinling is a major mountain range running through southern Shaanxi Province that divides the northern and southern regions of China. The range features forested slopes, deep valleys, and plateaus that create distinct environmental zones across its length.
Throughout Chinese history, the range served as a natural defensive boundary against nomadic groups from the north across multiple dynasties. Few mountain passes punctuated this barrier, making passage difficult and controllable.
Buddhist and Taoist monasteries scattered throughout the range have shaped spiritual life in the region for centuries. These sacred sites remain gathering places where visitors encounter living religious practices woven into daily routines and seasonal celebrations.
A railway tunnel built in the 1990s now connects previously isolated communities on either side of the range. Visitors should plan trips during warmer months when mountain passages and trails are most accessible.
A distinct population of Qinling pandas lives in the forests of the range, displaying brown and beige markings instead of the typical black and white pattern. This rare color variation exists nowhere else in the world.
