Zittau Mountains, Mountain range in Görlitz, Germany.

The Zittau Mountains are a sandstone mountain range near Görlitz that spreads across approximately 14 kilometers. The highest peak, Lausche, reaches 792 meters and dominates the landscape with its distinctive rock formations.

The range was formerly called Lusatian Ridge and formed during the Tertiary period through intense volcanic and tectonic activity. These geological processes created the sandstone structures that shape the landscape today.

Traditional timber-frame farmhouses in Waltersdorf, Jonsdorf, and Bertsdorf shape the character of the region. Walking through these villages, you immediately notice the distinctive building style that reflects local craftsmanship passed down through generations.

The Zittau Narrow Gauge Railway connects multiple entry points and links hiking trails with climbing spots throughout the range. This train service makes it easy to reach different areas and plan longer routes without excessive walking between locations.

The Nonnenfelsen rock formation near Jonsdorf and the organ-shaped rocks of Jonsdorfer Felsenstadt display striking patterns created by natural sandstone erosion. These formations result from water and wind wearing away the stone over long periods, creating their distinctive appearances.
