Eastern Macedonia and Thrace

Eastern Macedonia and Thrace covers the northeastern part of mainland Greece, including the islands of Thasos and Samothrace along with extensive mountain ranges.

The region changed hands between various empires, from Philip II of Macedonia in 346 BC through Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman control until joining modern Greece.

The territory maintains Greece's primary Muslim population, including Pomaks and Western Thrace Turks, who remained after the 1923 Greek-Turkish population exchange.

Two airports serve the region: Kavala National Airport and Alexandroupolis International Airport, with additional connections through national railways and KTEL bus services.

The Via Egnatia, a Roman road crossing Western Thrace, continues to influence modern transportation routes and regional development patterns in northeastern Greece.
