The county was established on February 1, 1950, through the merger of pre-World War II Bács-Bodrog and southern sections of Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kiskun counties.
The region sustains traditional Hungarian crafts, particularly in Kalocsa, where residents maintain folk art practices through embroidery, pottery, and decorative painting.
Transportation networks include 2,213 kilometers of main roads connecting the county seat of Kecskemét with other districts and neighboring Serbian territories.
The county contains multiple natural lakes, including Lake Szelid and Lake Vadkert, while supporting ten percent of Hungary's total pig population.
