Guntur district, Administrative district in Andhra Pradesh, India
Guntur is an administrative area in Andhra Pradesh stretching between the Krishna plain and the coast. The area includes both flat agricultural zones with rice paddies and plantations as well as smaller towns with markets and religious sites.
The administrative area was established in the late 18th century under British colonial rule and remained part of Madras Province until independence. After 1947 it passed through several state reorganizations before finally joining Andhra Pradesh.
The region is known for its spicy food and spice markets where visitors encounter piles of red chili peppers and intense aromas. In temples and marketplaces you hear Telugu everywhere as traders and buyers negotiate prices for peppers and tobacco.
Main roads and railway lines connect the larger towns and make getting around the area relatively easy. Those visiting rural parts should plan for longer travel times on smaller roads.
The red chili peppers from this area are considered particularly hot nationwide and are traded in large quantities at specialized markets. Tobacco cultivation also plays an important role, and many traders come from far away to buy goods at auctions.
