Vishnuprayag, human settlement in India
Vishnuprayag is a small settlement in Uttarakhand, India, where the Dhauliganga and Alaknanda rivers meet. Stone steps lead down to the water and simple buildings line both banks at this river confluence.
Vishnuprayag has been a sacred site in Hindu tradition for centuries, as river confluences hold deep spiritual meaning in this faith. The settlement grew slowly around the pilgrimage route that passed through this point.
The name joins the Hindu god Vishnu with the Sanskrit word Prayag, which means a river confluence. Along the riverbanks, visitors can watch pilgrims performing ritual offerings and prayers at the water's edge.
The settlement can be reached by road and basic accommodation and food are available nearby. Visiting between May and October is advisable, as mountain paths in the area are open and weather is more manageable during those months.
Vishnuprayag is the highest of the five sacred confluences in this region, collectively known as the Panch Prayag. These five points mark the course of the Alaknanda before it eventually joins the Ganges further down in the valley.
