Chandimandir Cantonment, Military cantonment in Panchkula district, India
Chandimandir Cantonment is a military installation in Panchkula district located at the base of the Sivalik Hills. The complex spreads across extensive grounds housing residential areas, commercial centers, schools, recreational facilities, and its own railway station.
The cantonment was established as the headquarters of India's Western Command after space constraints forced relocation from Shimla. The move in the late 1960s allowed the military to develop a new operational base with room for expansion.
The Chandi Mandir temple within the cantonment grounds shapes local worship practices and inspired the military station's name. The temple remains a spiritual focal point that coexists with the operational base.
The cantonment adjoins Panchkula city and is accessible by its own railway station. As an active military facility, access to certain areas may be restricted, so advance planning is recommended for visits.
Troops stationed here took part in Operation Blue Star, a major military operation at the Golden Temple in Amritsar during 1984. This event remains a defining moment in the cantonment's operational history.
