Tohoku Expressway, Toll road between Kawaguchi and Aomori, Japan.
The Tohoku Expressway is a toll road between Kawaguchi and Aomori that stretches over 670 kilometers through multiple prefectures, linking Tokyo with northern Japan. The southern section features six lanes, while the northern portions narrow to four lanes to adapt to the terrain and traffic volume.
Construction began in the early 1970s with the first section opening in November 1972. The complete connection to Kawaguchi was established in September 1987, finishing a construction phase that lasted over 15 years.
Rest stops along the route sell regional specialties from each prefecture the road crosses, allowing travelers to sample local flavors while taking a break. Many Japanese families use this highway for holiday trips to the north and stop at the same service areas that have become familiar waypoints on long journeys.
Numerous rest stops with restaurants and restrooms are located along the route, offering opportunities for breaks during long drives. Electronic toll systems allow quick passage through payment gates without stopping, reducing overall travel time.
This route holds the title of the longest expressway in Japan and requires about 13,800 yen in tolls for a standard vehicle traveling the entire length. Driving from one end to the other typically takes 10 to 12 hours, depending on traffic and the number of breaks.
