Svealand, Historical land region in central Sweden
Svealand is a land region in central Sweden spanning six provinces from the Baltic Sea to the Norwegian border. The territory features extensive forests, numerous lakes, and fertile plains, with Stockholm located within its bounds.
This region was the homeland of the Swear people, a Scandinavian group whose expansion formed the core of the medieval Swedish kingdom. From here, Swedish power gradually extended across the peninsula over many centuries.
Each of the six provinces here has its own traditions and distinctive character that you notice in local celebrations and daily life. These regional differences shape much of Sweden's cultural identity today.
This region is sparsely populated and largely covered by nature, so expect longer travel distances between towns. Stockholm serves as a natural starting point for exploration since most transportation networks connect through it.
Deep forests like Tiveden, Tylöskog, and Kolmården form natural boundaries separating this region from southern Götaland. These wooded areas created historical barriers that made travel and trade between regions difficult.
