Vaca Muerta Formation

The Vaca Muerta Formation extends across 30,000 square kilometers of northern Patagonia, containing layers of marl, organic shale, and lime-mudstone deposits.

Charles E. Weaver defined this formation in geological literature in 1931, leading to its recognition as a major source of hydrocarbons in South America.

The formation's development has transformed the Neuquén region into an industrial center, attracting workers and companies from across Argentina and worldwide.

Access to the formation requires special permits and guided tours through approved agencies, with the city of Neuquén serving as the main operational base.

The sedimentary layers reach depths between 2,500 and 3,500 meters, preserving numerous marine fossils from the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous periods.
