Caylloma Province, Provincial territory in Arequipa Department, Peru
Caylloma Province is an administrative region in Arequipa that covers mountainous land with deep valleys and snow-capped peaks. The territory is divided into twenty different districts spread across approximately 14,000 square kilometers.
This land was originally home to the Collaguas and Cabanas peoples before becoming a major mining region during Spanish colonial times. Silver mining in particular shaped the economy and growth of settlements across many generations.
People in this province speak both Spanish and Quechua, keeping alive traditional farming methods passed down through families. Religious festivals and local customs shape daily life in the communities and show how deeply rooted people are in their land.
You can reach this province by regular bus service from Arequipa city, with the journey taking about four hours along mountain roads. The mountainous location means roads are winding and weather can change quickly throughout the day.
This area contains multiple ecological zones ranging from peaks above 4,300 meters to deep river valleys below. These differences in elevation create completely different climate conditions within relatively short distances.
