El Peñón is a mountain village in Catamarca Province situated at roughly 3400 meters elevation in northwestern Argentina. The settlement sits in the Puna region, where salt flats and volcanic formations shape the landscape.

The village grew from indigenous communities that adapted to high-altitude living over many generations. These roots shape how the region is still inhabited today.

Residents here practice traditions rooted in Puna customs, blending Spanish colonial influences with Andean ways of life. This fusion appears in daily activities and community gatherings throughout the village.

The village lies about 63 kilometers north of Antofagasta de la Sierra via Provincial Route 43. It serves as a base for exploring nearby natural attractions and remote landscapes.

The village sits near Laguna Grande and acts as a gateway to the Campo de Piedra Pómez Natural Reserve. This reserve features distinctive white rock formations that create an unexpected landscape.
