City of Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is a large administrative region on southeastern Queensland's coast, stretching from Beenleigh to Coolangatta and combining coastal towns with inland communities. The area blends popular beach suburbs like Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach with quieter residential neighborhoods in the hinterland.

The area formed in 1948 when several municipalities merged to create the Town of South Coast as a single administrative entity. This consolidation allowed coordinated management for the rapidly expanding coastal region.

The municipal administration coordinates twelve libraries, multiple recreational facilities, and supports international relations through sister city agreements worldwide.

Visitors can explore the area through multiple entry points along the coast and from Brisbane's north, with local buses and road networks connecting different neighborhoods. Practical services are found in the local centers of Southport, Broadbeach, and Coolangatta.

The administrative region encompasses around 890 kilometers of constructed waterways, created through transformation of natural wetlands into residential canals. These artificial water channels rank among the most extensive in Australia and show how the landscape has been reshaped for urban development.
