Adventure Thru Inner Space, Dark ride in Tomorrowland at Disneyland, US
Adventure Thru Inner Space was a ride in Tomorrowland at Disneyland Park in California that transported visitors in moving cabins through a simulated microscopic world. Passengers sat in vehicles called Atomobiles and observed magnified representations of snowflakes, water molecules and atomic structures.
The ride opened in August 1967 as part of the redesign of Tomorrowland and remained operational for nearly two decades. In September 1985 the facility closed permanently to make room for a different ride.
Narrator Paul Frees recorded the script while the Sherman Brothers wrote an original melody to accompany the molecular journey. Guests heard sounds reminiscent of laboratory experiments and saw models of atoms rendered in glowing colors.
The vehicles moved continuously on a track so guests boarded while the ride was in motion and the pace remained constant. The experience lasted several minutes and passed through dark rooms with glowing effects.
Optical tricks created the impression that visitors were shrinking smaller than an atom and could watch their own reduction in size. A large microscope at the entrance reinforced the illusion that passengers were entering an invisible world.
