Rocket Jets, Amusement ride in Disneyland, California.
Rocket Jets was an amusement ride in the Tomorrowland section of Disneyland in California, where small rocket-shaped gondolas orbited a central tower. Riders could control the height of their rocket during the flight, giving them a changing view over the park.
Rocket Jets opened in 1967 as the third rotating rocket ride in Disneyland, built on the elevated PeopleMover platform. After thirty years of operation, it closed in 1997.
The ride reflected the space craze of the 1960s, with rocket-shaped cars and a central tower inspired by NASA imagery. For many visitors, soaring above the park in a rocket felt like a direct echo of the Apollo era.
The ride platform sat at an elevated level and could only be reached by climbing several flights of stairs. Visitors with mobility needs had to transfer to reach the top, so it was worth planning ahead.
After closing, the structure was not torn down but turned into a kinetic sculpture called Observatron, which rotated a few times a month while playing music. The site stayed visible and active long after the ride itself had stopped running.
