Lagunas de Chacahua National Park

The park spans 132 square kilometers, featuring multiple interconnected lagoons surrounded by mangroves, tropical forests, and coastal dunes along the Pacific Ocean.

The Mexican government established Lagunas de Chacahua as a national park in 1937 to protect its wetlands, lagoons, and diverse ecological systems.

Local fishermen maintain traditional fishing methods in the lagoons, while community members guide visitors through the waterways and natural areas.

Visitors reach the park by taking a combination of vehicles from Puerto Escondido to Zapotalito, followed by a boat ride through the lagoon system.

The park contains three different turtle nesting sites and a crocodile nursery dedicated to protecting the Mexican Pacific Coast crocodile species.
