Zaachila, Archaeological site in Oaxaca Valley, Mexico

The Zaachila archaeological complex contains stone tombs adorned with stucco figures representing characters from Mesoamerican mythology and calendar system.

The settlement reached its peak between 1200 and 1521 CE as a city-state under Zapotec rule, with King Cosijoeza leading territorial expansions.

The site exhibits architectural elements from both Zapotec and Mixtec cultures, including ceremonial structures and burial chambers decorated with polychrome pottery.

Located 15 kilometers south of Oaxaca City along Federal Highway 131, the archaeological zone offers guided tours and temporary exhibition areas.

The excavated royal tombs contain intricate relief carvings of death-related symbols and preserved offerings of gold objects, precious stones, and ancient jewelry.
