Tlaxiaco, Mountain municipality in Oaxaca, Mexico.
Tlaxiaco is a mountain municipality in Oaxaca situated in a highland valley of the Sierra Madre del Sur at approximately 2,040 meters elevation. The settlement spreads across gentle slopes and forms a cohesive community center with residential areas nestled into the landscape.
The settlement emerged as a strategic point during the French invasion of Mexico between 1862 and 1867. Due to its importance in that period, the municipality later received the title of Heroica Ciudad.
The central market displays local handicrafts, traditional textiles, and regional foods that reflect Mixtec and mestizo heritage. People gather here daily to trade goods and maintain their customs.
Visitors reach the municipality via regional highways connected to Oaxaca City, with the journey taking approximately two hours by vehicle from the state capital. Those traveling by car should be prepared for mountain roads and allow adequate time for the drive.
The name comes from Nahuatl meaning 'Place where it rains on the ball court,' while the Mixtec name Ndijiinu means 'good view.' This dual naming reflects the cultural overlap of the region.
