Oaxaca de Juárez, Capital city in southern Mexico.
The city extends across valleys at 1555 meters elevation, surrounded by mountains of the Sierra Madre and crossed by the Atoyac River.
The Spanish established the city in 1486, naming it Huaxyacac from the Nahuatl language, referring to a local tree species in the region.
The Museum of Cultures presents extensive collections of archaeological artifacts, textiles, and documents highlighting the heritage of 16 indigenous groups.
The central district contains numerous accommodations, from converted convents to modern hotels, all within walking distance of the main square.
The green stone quarried from local sources defines the colonial architecture, leading to the nickname Verde Antequera for the entire city.
