La Entrega, Sandy beach in Oaxaca, Mexico
La Entrega is a sandy beach set inside a sheltered bay near Puerto Ángel in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, framed by rocky outcrops on both sides. The water inside the bay is shallow and calm, and a coral reef runs close to the shore.
The bay served as a stopping point for boats traveling along the Oaxacan coast from colonial times onward. Puerto Ángel grew into the main port of the region, and this beach remained part of the wider fishing activity that shaped the local community.
Fishing boats anchor in the bay every day, and fresh catch is sold directly from small stalls near the water. The simple restaurants along the shore cook dishes following local Oaxacan recipes, which differ noticeably from the food found at other Mexican beach towns.
Snorkeling gear is available to rent directly on the beach, so there is no need to bring your own. Morning hours tend to offer the clearest water for watching fish around the reef.
The name La Entrega means "the handover" in Spanish and is said to refer to a moment in the 19th century when a Mexican general was captured and handed over to enemy forces right in this bay. Few visitors know the story behind the name, even though it is the reason the place is called what it is.
