Huatulco National Park, National park and Ramsar wetland in Oaxaca, Mexico

Huatulco National Park is a protected coastal area in Oaxaca that spans 11,890 hectares and encompasses nine bays with coastal and marine habitats. The area supports diverse plant and animal species, with tropical dry forest covering most of this territory.

The Mexican government established Huatulco National Park in 1998 as a protected coastal and marine area. It received recognition as a Ramsar wetland site in 2003, highlighting its global importance for wetland conservation.

Local communities actively engage in conservation projects and share their knowledge about regional traditions and the importance of coastal ecosystems with visitors. You can see how people here use sustainable tourism as a way to protect their home.

Visitors can enjoy activities like snorkeling, hiking, and birdwatching on marked trails from December to April during the dry season. It is important to bring waterproof gear and stay on marked paths to protect the environment and wildlife.

The park contains around 9,000 plant species, representing roughly half of Mexico's total plant diversity. This remarkable botanical concentration makes it a globally important place for understanding tropical dry forest ecosystems.
