Santa María del Tule stretches across 25.2 square kilometers of land in Oaxaca state, located 11 kilometers southeast of Oaxaca city.
The area contained a substantial lake with surrounding marshes filled with cypress trees, where local inhabitants extracted and processed lime during pre-Hispanic periods.
The town celebrates three major festivals: Candelaria on February 2, Feast of the Assumption on August 15, and Festival of the Tule Tree in October.
Regular buses depart every 10 minutes from Oaxaca City's second-class station, with additional transport options available near the baseball stadium on Niños Heroes.
The municipality centers around an ancient Montezuma cypress tree measuring 52.5 meters in diameter, with bark patterns forming recognizable shapes of animals.
