Cueva de los Guácharos National Natural Park

The park spans 9,000 hectares across three departments, featuring limestone caves, deep canyons, and mountainous terrain at elevations reaching 2,478 meters.

Established in 1960 as Colombia's first national park, this protected area maintains extensive sections of primary Andean forest in the eastern mountain range.

The nearby town of Palestina serves as the primary gateway to the park, connecting local communities with nature conservation efforts since 1923.

Visitors can access the park through Pitalito by taking a three-hour bus ride to Palestina, followed by local transportation to the entrance.

The park houses colonies of oilbirds, nocturnal fruit-eating birds that navigate through dark caves using echolocation similar to bats.
