Atlixco, Colonial town in Puebla State, Mexico
Atlixco is a city in Puebla located in a fertile valley at about 1,834 meters elevation. The settlement developed in an agricultural region irrigated by the Molinos River, which flows down from the Iztaccíhuatl volcano.
Spanish colonist Alonso Díaz de Carrión founded Villa de Carrión here on September 22, 1579. The settlement gradually grew and eventually became what is known today as Atlixco.
The city hosts the El Huey Atlixcayotl festival, where traditional dances and indigenous ceremonies from across the region come to life. Visitors can observe how these celebrations remain woven into the identity and daily rhythm of local communities.
A central market operates every Saturday with local produce, fresh flowers, textiles, and products from surrounding communities. This gathering provides the best opportunity to see what the area grows and makes by hand.
