San Francisco Transbay development, Skyscraper development in South of Market, San Francisco, United States
The Transbay development is a large-scale project in South of Market featuring a transit center wrapped in white metal with a rooftop park covering several acres. The complex combines residential buildings, office space, and retail areas with this central transportation hub.
The site previously held the 1939 Transbay Terminal and Embarcadero Freeway, both damaged during the 1989 earthquake. The structures were removed to make way for this new development.
The transit center serves as a hub where people transfer between buses and connect to other neighborhoods through integrated public spaces and retail areas.
Visitors can access the rooftop park and explore the transit center, which serves multiple bus lines and connects to other transportation options. Public areas are accessible during daytime hours for walking and resting.
The rooftop park contains 60 different tree species and features a fountain that activates when buses arrive at the station below. This connection between the park above and the transit hub creates an unusual interactive feature.
