London Bridge, Arch bridge in Lake Havasu City, US
London Bridge is a relocated granite and concrete structure in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. The construction stretches 920 feet (280 meters) across the Bridgewater Channel, linking the mainland with the artificial island of Pittsburgh Point.
The structure was built in 1831 across the River Thames in London and purchased by Robert McCulloch for 2.4 million dollars in 1968. After dismantling in England, the stones traveled through the Panama Canal and reassembly in the Arizona desert followed between 1968 and 1971.
The bridge serves as a popular gathering spot for locals and visitors who walk along the channel or photograph at sunset. Families often meet on Pittsburgh Point island for picnics and small celebrations with views across the water.
The bridge remains open to pedestrians and cars at all times, allowing access to the island throughout the day. Boats pass beneath the structure while walkers find viewing points on both sides of the channel.
Each of the more than 10000 granite blocks was numbered and catalogued before transport so the structure could be reassembled stone by stone correctly. The channel beneath was excavated only after assembly, meaning the construction initially stood over dry land.
