Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture

Bayingolin spans 471,480 square kilometers across three geographical zones: Tianshan Mountains, Tarim Basin, and Kunlun-Arjin Mountains with nine administrative subdivisions.

The prefecture was established on June 23, 1954, with Mongols constituting 35 percent of the population, though their numbers decreased to 4 percent by 2020.

The region incorporates multiple ethnic groups with Han Chinese representing 53 percent, Uyghur 36 percent, Hui 5 percent, and Mongol communities maintaining traditional practices.

Transportation infrastructure includes three airports: Korla Airport, Qiemo Yudu Airport, and Ruoqiang Loulan Airport, connecting the prefecture to major Chinese cities.

The Bayabulak Grassland contains Swan Lake, where migratory birds gather each spring, forming the largest alpine grassland system in China.
