Hoh Xil

Hoh Xil is a nature reserve on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, stretching across vast high-altitude grasslands with extreme weather conditions year-round. The region sits at one of the highest elevations on Earth, making it a remote and harsh environment.

The area became a protected nature reserve in 1995 to safeguard the native wildlife living there. This designation marked a turning point in efforts to preserve the fragile high-altitude ecosystems.

This land has long been home to Tibetan herders who follow seasonal patterns to move their livestock across the high grasslands, adapting their way of life to the natural rhythms.

Access requires special permits and proper cold-weather equipment due to the extreme altitude and harsh climate throughout the year. Plan for significant acclimatization time before arriving, as your body needs time to adjust to the high elevation.

The region contains Zhuonai Lake, a critical breeding site for Tibetan antelopes during their annual migration cycle. This lake plays a vital role in the survival of these wild animals in this remote mountain area.
