Hoh Xil, Nature reserve in Qinghai, China
The Hoh Xil region spans across 83,000 square kilometers of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, with an average elevation of 4,800 meters above sea level.
In 1995, Chinese authorities established the national nature reserve status for 45,000 square kilometers of the Hoh Xil territory to protect local wildlife.
The territory maintains traditional Tibetan nomadic practices, where herders move their livestock according to seasonal patterns across the high-altitude grasslands.
Access to Hoh Xil requires specialized permits, appropriate cold-weather gear, and high-altitude adaptation due to extreme weather conditions throughout the year.
The region contains the Zhuonai Lake, which serves as a primary breeding ground for Tibetan antelopes during their annual migration period.
