Hunsrück, Mountain range in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
The Hunsrück is a mountain range in Rhineland-Palatinate, lying between the Rhine to the east, the Moselle to the north, the Saar to the west, and the Nahe to the south. Forested ridges alternate with farmland plateaus and deep valleys that shape the terrain.
Stone axes and settlement remains from the New Stone Age show early occupation of this area. Later, Roman roads and medieval castles shaped the development of the region.
Many communities still speak the Hunsrückisch dialect, which differs noticeably from neighboring varieties. Village gatherings throughout the year feature local craftspeople displaying their work and passing on older ways of living.
Visitors find well-marked hiking trails through forests and across open plateaus, offering different levels of difficulty. Frankfurt-Hahn Airport in the central part serves as a reference point and transport hub for travelers.
Quartzite formations run through large sections of the range and give the soil its particular character. The highest point is the Erbeskopf at 816 meters (2,677 feet), offering views far into the surrounding countryside on clear days.
