Denizli, Metropolitan municipality in southwestern Turkey
Denizli is a large city in southwestern Turkey that sits at the base of Mount Gökbel and is encircled by gardens and fields growing cotton, grains, figs and tobacco. The streets wind through several districts where residential and commercial zones sit side by side, while parks and public squares provide spaces for daily life.
The area rose in importance after the ancient city of Laodicea was abandoned during the 12th-century conflicts between Byzantines and Seljuq Turks. Merchants and settlers moved into the fertile valley and established a new settlement that gradually grew into the modern city.
Fabric sellers in the city center offer woven and embroidered goods still made using traditional techniques passed down through generations. The textile workshops in the outer districts showcase the centuries-old craft that gave the city its commercial reputation.
Denizli Çardak Airport lies outside the city and offers connections to other parts of the country. Buses and private vehicles bring visitors from there into the center or to the nearby thermal springs, which serve as a starting point for further trips.
The province holds three ancient cities mentioned in early religious writings: Laodicea, Colossae and Hierapolis. Each of these sites draws archaeologists and visitors interested in the early history of the region.
