Nasiriyah Drainage Pump Station

The Nasiriyah Drainage Pump Station is a large water management facility in Baghdad designed to move excess water from farmland toward the Euphrates River. It operates with multiple powerful pumps that work continuously to prevent waterlogging in the surrounding agricultural fields.

The facility was established in the 1980s with Brazilian support to improve water management in Mesopotamia. The project was later revised by foreign experts and modernized during the 2000s.

The station fulfills recommendations made by British engineer Frank Haigh in 1951 regarding the reconstruction of drainage systems in the Mesopotamian Marshes region.

The best way to visit this location is to plan your access in advance and explore the area during daylight hours. Keep in mind that this is a working facility and may not be completely open to casual visitors.

This structure represents the largest drainage pump system throughout the Middle East, processing water from a 232-square-mile agricultural zone.
