Farah Province

The province occupies 48,000 square kilometers of land between Herat to the north, Ghor to the northeast, and Iran to the west.

The area, known as Drangiana in 500 BC, formed part of the Median Empire, Achaemenids, Seleucid Empire, and Sassanids before Islamic conquest in 651 AD.

The population of 573,146 inhabitants includes 80 percent Pashtun communities and 14 percent Tajik groups, with Persian and Pashto as primary languages.

The provincial airport near Farah city maintains scheduled flights to Herat, while the region contains mineral deposits including gypsum, lime, and copper.

The region recorded one of Afghanistan's highest temperatures at 49.9 degrees Celsius in August 2009, reflecting its extreme desert climate conditions.
