Ghor Province, Mountain province in central Afghanistan
Ghor is a province in central Afghanistan characterized by high mountain terrain shaped by numerous river valleys. The landscape consists of steep ridges, deep gorges, and elevated plateaus that define the region's dramatic geography.
The region served as an important center during the medieval period under the Ghurid Dynasty, which left significant architectural works throughout the area. This era shaped the cultural and political development of the region for centuries to come.
The population includes three main ethnic groups: Tajiks representing 58 percent, Hazara making up 39 percent, and Pashtuns comprising 3 percent.
The region is mountainous and difficult to access, so visitors should be prepared for challenging travel conditions and limited infrastructure. Local guidance and careful planning are important for navigating the area safely.
Multiple rivers, including Morghab, Hirayrud, and Farahrud, flow through the province, creating deep valleys between the mountain ranges.
