San Jose de Moro

San Jose de Moro is an archaeological site in La Libertad containing multiple burial grounds from the ancient Moche period. The grounds extend along a river valley and hold several tomb types that have been uncovered through excavation.

The site served as an important ceremonial center for the Moche culture from around 400 to 1000 AD. The different burial types reflect how funeral practices evolved across this long period.

The location sits in a dry region with little shade, so bring sun protection and plenty of water. The best time to visit is during the drier months when access is easier.

Excavations have revealed high-status female burials with valuable offerings, showing that priestesses held important roles in Moche society. These findings challenge earlier assumptions about male dominance in ancient Andean cultures.
