Tower of Terror II, Steel roller coaster at Dreamworld, Queensland, Australia.
Tower of Terror II was a steel roller coaster at Dreamworld Theme Park that rose 115 meters into the air with a track spanning 376 meters. The system launched riders backward at speeds of 160 kilometers per hour.
From January to March 1997, this coaster held the world record for both fastest and tallest roller coaster. The project marked a turning point in high-speed thrill ride development at theme parks.
The ride was themed as an escape from a high-rise building, with corridors and stairwells designed to look like an emergency evacuation route. Visitors experienced the sensation of fleeing a modern tower.
The ride operated backward, which made it a novel and intense experience for many visitors. Those sensitive to heights or rapid motion should consider this before boarding.
During the backward descent, riders experienced about 6.5 seconds of weightlessness. The electromagnetic launch system accelerated them to full speed in just seven seconds.
