Kusilvak Census Area, Census area in western Alaska, United States
Kusilvak Census Area is an administrative region in western Alaska covering approximately 19,673 square miles of land. It spans tundra landscapes and portions of the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge, characterized by scattered small settlements and waterways.
This region was previously known as Wade Hampton Census Area until 2015, when it was renamed Kusilvak Census Area after the Kusilvak Mountains. The change reflected a shift toward honoring local geographic roots and Native identity.
Native communities here follow a traditional way of living where hunting, fishing, and gathering are central to how people organize their year and stay connected to the land. These practices shape daily rhythms and social bonds within the settlements.
Travel in this region requires careful planning since infrastructure is limited and distances between settlements are vast. Severe weather conditions can significantly affect access to areas, particularly during long winter months.
This region has one of the youngest populations in the United States, with a median resident age around 20 years. This youthful profile shapes the character of local communities and their future prospects.
