Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, National park and preserve in Bettles, United States.

The Gates of the Arctic National Park spans over 8 million acres of untouched wilderness with mountain ranges, tundra landscapes, and six wild rivers.

Robert Marshall named the park in 1929 after discovering two mountain peaks, Frigid Crags and Boreal Mountain, which form a corridor in Brooks Range.

Native tribes have inhabited the Brooks Range region for 12,500 years, sustaining themselves through caribou hunting and natural resources.

Access to the park requires flying from Fairbanks to gateway communities like Bettles, as there are no established roads or designated trails within the area.

The park contains the migration path of over 500,000 caribou that traverse Brooks Range twice yearly between their winter and summer grounds.

Natural wonders in remote Alaska locations

Alaska presents natural sites in remote areas distant from urban centers. These locations display the geological diversity of the state: glaciers, volcanoes, dunes, hot springs and waterfalls. Visitors discover historical mining sites, indigenous cultural locations and museums. The region enables encounters with brown bears, whales and other wildlife in their natural habitat.
