Motor Boat Cruise, Boat attraction in Fantasyland, Disneyland, US.
The Motor Boat Cruise was a boat ride in Fantasyland where visitors steered small vessels along water channels marked with landscaping and navigation markers. Each boat held up to four passengers seated on a bench with a central steering wheel that anyone could operate during the journey.
The attraction opened in June 1957 between Fantasyland and Tomorrowland as a novel way for visitors to control their own ride experience. It closed in January 1993 to make way for the new themed land Mickey's Toontown.
The ride drew on the television series Adventures of the Gummi Bears when it was updated in 1991 to incorporate those characters into the experience. This connection made the journey through the waterway feel more like stepping into a familiar story for children.
The ride worked best for groups with multiple children and adults since the steering wheel could be shared among different people during the journey. Visitors should know that younger children needed help steering, and because the water was shallow, the boats moved at a gentle pace.
The steering wheel system used hidden water tracks to gently guide the boats, so visitors felt they were fully in control while remaining on a set path. This technology was innovative when the ride opened, allowing families to enjoy a hands-on experience without real steering challenges.
