San Martín Tilcajete, Artisanal municipality in Ocotlán District, Mexico

San Martín Tilcajete is a municipality in the Ocotlán District situated in the central valleys region at approximately 1540 meters elevation. The settlement sits in hilly terrain where woodcarving forms the backbone of community life and income.

The municipality emerged around 1600 and gradually developed into a center of wooden craftsmanship passed down through generations. This artisanal tradition became the economic foundation that has sustained the community over centuries.

Local artisans here create detailed wooden figures called alebrijes from copal wood, decorating them with geometric patterns and vibrant colors that reflect the area's artistic tradition.

The settlement is best explored on foot, as most artisan workshops are scattered throughout and around the village center. The higher elevation means cooler air and visiting during early daylight hours tends to be more comfortable.

The production of alebrijes requires treating the wood with gasoline to eliminate insects before carving can begin. This preparatory step is essential for ensuring quality before applying multiple layers of paint to each piece.

The region extends from mountain landscapes in the north to coastal areas with lagoons and beaches in the south. Natural variety ranges from waterfalls like La Reforma to the petrified springs of Hierve el Agua. In villages such as Teotitlán del Valle, families weave rugs using techniques passed down through generations. San Martín Tilcajete is known for its wood carvings. Along the coast, places like Mazunte and Puerto Escondido provide access to the Pacific. Colonial churches such as Santo Domingo Yanhuitlán and the chapel at Ocotlán display architecture from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
