Ixtepec, Oaxaca, Railway town in Istmo de Tehuantepec region, Mexico
Ixtepec is a railway town in the Istmo de Tehuantepec region of southern Oaxaca, situated at about 40 meters elevation between mountains and plains. The settlement spreads across key transport corridors that connect surrounding communities and regions.
The town was founded in the 16th century as a Zapotec community called Iztepeque and kept its local independence through the 18th century. This period of autonomy shaped how the community developed and organized itself.
The name comes from Nahuatl words meaning agave fiber and hill, reflecting the landscape and its resources. Local people maintain connection to this heritage through traditional knowledge of regional plants and crafts.
The town is about 15 minutes from Juchitan de Zaragoza and 45 minutes from Tehuantepec, with easy access to regional transport routes. Visitors typically arrive from these nearby towns or along the main regional highways.
Archaeological digs at El Carrizal uncovered artifacts from around 100 BCE, showing that people lived in this area much earlier than later settlement records suggest. These early findings reveal a longer human presence in the region than previously documented.
