Laguna Chichankanab

Laguna Chichankanab is a natural lake that stretches about 30 kilometers through northwestern Quintana Roo and contains mineral-rich waters. Clay layers on the lake bed prevent water from seeping into the underlying bedrock.

The lake formed during a period when classical Maya civilizations were losing influence. The formation of gypsum deposits on the lake bed during extended droughts corresponds with this decline period.

The name comes from Maya language and means 'mouth of the crocodile'. Local people share stories about submerged settlements beneath the waters and connect the place to ancient legends.

The lake received protection status in 2004 and serves as a habitat for many bird species that overwinter or pass through the area. It makes sense to bring binoculars and sturdy footwear while allowing time to observe and explore.

The lake contains seven endemic pupfish species that evolved to occupy different ecological niches within the water system. These small fish demonstrate how species specialize in isolated bodies of water and adapt to fill various roles.
