Laguna Chichankanab

Lake Chichankanab extends for 30 kilometers through northwest Quintana Roo, containing mineral-rich waters and clay beds that prevent seepage into bedrock.

The formation of gypsum deposits on the lake bed during extended droughts correlates with the decline period of classical Mayan civilization.

The local population preserves stories about ancient settlements beneath the waters and a mythical giant prehistoric snake named 'siete jorobas'.

The lake received Ramsar site designation in 2004, protecting 1,999 hectares of land that supports 97 species of migratory birds.

The lake contains seven endemic species of pupfish from genus Cyprinodon that evolved to occupy different ecological positions within the water system.
