Transbay Transit Center, Transit hub in downtown San Francisco, US
The Transbay Transit Center is a large transportation hub in central San Francisco that brings together buses from across the Bay Area. The multi-level building extends over several city blocks between Mission and Howard Streets and features wide boarding platforms, a glass entrance hall, and a planted roof terrace.
The old terminal from 1939 connected San Francisco to the East Bay via the bridge and served for decades as the main transfer point. The new building opened in 2018 and greatly expands the range of regional and interregional connections.
The building takes its name from the Mission Street corridor and the original Bay Bridge connection that once ran directly through the site. Today commuters and visitors use the covered boarding areas on the ground floor, where passengers from different parts of the Bay meet and transfer between lines.
The boarding platforms are located at ground level, so access is easy and barrier-free. The upper area with the park is open during daytime and offers benches and shade under the trees.
Below the building sits an empty train station waiting for Caltrain trains and possibly California High-Speed Rail to arrive. So far this underground area remains unused, but the tracks and platforms are already in place.
