Ningxia is an autonomous region in north-central China that includes desert terrain, mountain ranges, and the fertile valley of the Yellow River. The territory covers approximately 66,400 square kilometers (25,600 square miles) and connects arid zones with irrigated farmland along the river.
The area was once the center of the Tangut kingdom before being absorbed into later Chinese dynasties. It became an autonomous region for the Hui population in 1958 after separating from Gansu province.

The capital city of Yinchuan serves as a starting point for travel through the region with road and rail links to other areas. The landscape shifts from dry desert zones in the south to irrigated fields in the northern valley.
The region operates vineyards across more than 40,000 hectares and is developing into an important wine-growing area in China. Many wineries offer tastings and show vineyards surrounded by desert hills.
